Come nasce Dōtonbori
Nel XVII secolo, l’imprenditore Doton Yasui studiò la possibilità di ramificare le vie fluviali di Ōsaka realizzando un canale che favorisse il trasporto delle merci. Il progetto fu impegnativo e terminò nel 1615, dopo la sua morte.
Tadaki Matsudaira, l’allora padrone del Castello di Ōsaka, decise di dedicare il canale a Doton, chiamandolo Dōtonbori (o dotonbori).
Nel periodo Edo, sotto il casato dei Tokugawa, il quartiere nato attorno al canale Dōtonbori assunse la connotazione di quartiere dei divertimenti di Ōsaka, grazie all’apertura di teatri Kabuki, teatri Bunraku (dei burattini) e molti ristoranti per accogliere turisti e visitatori, tanto che il nome del canale finì per rappresentare tutta l’area.
Oggi, per qualsiasi ragione si venga a Ōsaka, è impensabile non fare almeno una visita a questo quartiere, reso celebre dalle mille luci, dai ristoranti, dallo street food, dai divertimenti, le sale gioco i servizi turistici, i locali notturni…
Dōtonbori si articola tutto intorno al canale grazie a una comoda banchina pedonale su entrambi i lati che è sempre piena di gente sia per il semplice passeggio, sia per la presenza di localini caratteristici bordo fiume. Per attraversare da una sponda all’altra, i ponti principali sono Ebisubashi Bridge e Tazaemon Bridge, oltre al più grande Dotombori Bridge che offre la panoramica di tutta la zona.
I ristoranti con sale più ampie sono sulle vie parallele, Souemon-cho Street a nord e la Dōtonbori shōten machi a sud: quest’ultima si traduce in “via dello shopping di Dotombori” ed è il tratto da non perdere assolutamente, pieno di ristoranti, chioschi, sale da gioco (qui ho fatto conoscenza con lo spirito combattivo dei giapponesi di fronte ai giochi con le gru. quelli in cui guidi il braccio meccanico in una posizione sperando di acchiappare i premi dentro una vasca).
A unire queste direttrici orizzontali ci cono decine di vie trasversali, per lo più coperte, dove perdersi tra shopping e prelibatezze culinarie. Il centro ideale di questo dedalo, nel quale prima o poi ti ritroverai anche girando a caso tra le vie, è la piazzetta di Ebisubashi, accanto al ponte omonimo.
A spasso per Dōtonbori
La prima cosa a colpire sono le grandi insegne corredate di sculture fisse o meccaniche che, oltre ad attirare l’attenzione, cercano di spiegare a prima vista cosa si vende in quel locale o in quel ristorante: è celebre, ad esempio, il granchio gigante di Kani Doraku, ma potrai trovare tori, famiglie a cena, nigiri giganti o faccioni di cuochi arrabbiati.
Per capire che sei effettivamente a Dotombori, ti basta cercare 2 riferimenti:
- la grande insegna dell’uomo che corre, che pubblicizza la ditta Glico, quella che esporta in tutto il mondo i celeberrimi bastoncini ricoperti di cioccolato (noi li conosciamo come “Mikado”);
- i chioschi alimentari sparsi praticamente ovunque tra vie principali e gallerie trasversali.
Per le vie di Dōtombori potrai assaggiare tutte le principali varianti dello street food, sia dolce che salato, ma il “must” che non devi assolutamente lasciarti sfuggire è il takoyaki, le celeberrime polpettine di pastella che nascondono un pezzo di polipo e che sono uno dei piatti tipici di Ōsaka… io ti avverto: visti nel piatto sono soffici, carini e coccolosi come i triboli del capitano Kirk, ma nascondono un cuore che resta per molto molto tempo a temperatura da fusione della lava vulcanica quindi, se vuoi gustare altre cose nel tuo viaggio senza avere la lingua intorpidita, fai una spaccatura e lascia uscire un po’ di calore prima di lanciarli in bocca e rievocare scene fantozziane!
In ogni caso, anche se non vorrai assaggiarli, fermati di fronte a uno dei chioschi e resta ipnotizzato dalla maestria con cui prendono forma sulle caratteristiche piastre di ghisa. Una curiosità: quei trucioli scuri sopra i takoyaki che sembrano agitarsi col calore hanno il nome di katsuo-bushi, e sono delle scaglie finissime di tonno secco che sembrano nate per stare lì. Se riuscissi a sederti in un locale che fa solo takoyaki, stai certo che troverai sul tavolino un contenitore pieno di questa prelibatezza per metterlo sopra in autonomia.
La via pedonale a sud del canale è quella dedicata ai ristoranti con le insegne particolari di cui ti parlavo sopra.
Per delle foto spettacolari, specialmente la sera con le insegne led illuminate, ti consiglio di posizionarti sull’Ebisubashi Bridge oppure sul Dotonbori Bridge.
A soli 5 minuti in direzione sud, lungo la via Ebisubashi-Suji, troverai il punto vendita principale di Rikuro no Ojisan, il pasticcere che realizza le “cheesecake nuvola“, famose in tutto il Giappone: non aver paura di acquistarne una intera: sono così soffici che la finirai a morsi, un pezzo dopo l’altro. Dovrei dirti se sono buone o meno, ma qui i pareri sono contrastanti: il sapore e la consistenza sono così delicati che qualcuno la adora, mentre qualcun altro ha la classica faccia da “Ma è uno scherzo? Andiamo a mangiare qualcosa di solido, ora!”. Come sempre, per sapere se è di tuo gusto hai un solo modo: assaggiarla!
Ora, da bravo blogger, dovrei consigliarti il posto migliore in cui gustare il takoyaki, ma la verità è che mi sono piaciuti tutti e quindi vai pure dove ti porta il cuore: difficilmente sarai deluso.
Se vuoi andare sul sicuro, ti dico quelli che ho provato io:
- Acchichi Honpo Dotonbori sotto le scalette del ponte Tazaemon, contraddistinto da immagini di polpo che ricordano i disegni di Doraemon.
- Dotombori Kukuru vicino all’Ebisubashi bridge, sulla via principale dello shopping.
Entrambi, con un po’ di pazienza per l’eventuale coda, offrono una sala interna che ti permetterà di mangiare in serenità (folla permettendo) riposando le gambe dopo aver girato per tutto il giorno.
Per provare un vivacissimo ristorante con servizio al bancone specializzato in spiedini e altre tipologie di street food, cerca il faccione di un cuoco e verifica che si chiami Kushikatsu Daruma. Prova gli spiedini nelle 3 varietà manzo, gamberoni e formaggio!
Se volessi provare il famosissimo okonomiyaki, le frittate di Anacleto Marrabbio, noto padre di Licia (poi non dite che non c’è cultura tra le pagine di Lallero), ti consiglio la catena Chibo, mentre per un ottimo ramen puoi provare i ristoranti Kinryu Ramen, ma metti i calzini puliti perché le scarpe le lasci all’ingresso.
Se dopo il salato ti andasse un dolcetto, hai l’imbarazzo della scelta tra specialità come il melonpan col gelato al matcha, il taiyaki (dolcetto a forma di pesce ripieno di crema di fagioli rossi azuki) e le fragole trasformate in ogni maniera.
Dato il suo carattere tipico di luogo dedicato allo street food, Dotombori va un po’ in deroga alle ferree regole del mangiare camminando e quindi è difficile che ti dicano qualcosa se ti allontani dai chioschi: vale sempre la regola del rispetto e dell’educazione per non sentirsi fuori posto (vedi il Diario di Viaggio che ho pubblicato nella pagina principale di Ōsaka).
Come a Shibuya
Se sei stato a Shibuya, il quartiere più caotico di Tokyo, sarai stato certamente rapito dalla grafica 3D del gigantesco led che riproduce un gattino. Ebbene, anche Ōsaka ha la sua mascotte 3D: se ti piazzi su Ebisubashi Bridge guardando in alto in direzione di Starbucks, potrai vedere l’insegna che, a intervalli più o meno regolari (perdonami, non mi sono messo a cronometrare), ti regalerà dei siparietti con il cane Akita in 3D!
Non ti distrarre e non demordere perché quando compare resta molto poco…
Alternativa al casino
Dōtonbori merita una passeggiata per respirarne l’atmosfera, sia di giorno che di sera. Ma capisco che non tutti amino il casino e se anche tu, folklore a parte, preferiresti mangiare in un luogo più tranquillo ma sempre caratteristico, ti consiglio di fare appena due passi verso sud, al confine tra Dōtonbori e Nanba, per trovare viuzze piene di piccoli izakaya.
Questi piccoli locali hanno un numero limitato di posti e, spesso, si sta tutti a un unico tavolo o dietro al bancone che circonda il cuoco e la barriera linguistica cadrà al terzo bicchiere di sakè.
Per fare questa esperienza bisogna armarsi di un po’ di coraggio e sapersi affidare, con la consapevolezza che non è sempre necessario capire tutto tutto per vivere un’esperienza indimenticabile.
Il piccolo tempio di Hozen-ji
Se non te lo dicono che qui, tra le stradine di Dōtonbori c’è un tempio, gli passerai accanto senza accorgertene!
Eppure si tratta di un luogo antico ma a renderlo anonimo è complice lo stato di conservazione della statua principale che… si nasconde dietro al muschio.
Fondato nel 1637 in onore di Fudo Myoo, uno dei cinque guardiani del buddhismo, questo tempio sembra più un giardinetto con al centro una statua ricoperta di muschio, ma poi realizzi che c’è il braciere per accendere i rametti di incenso e uno spazio per la preghiera.
La particolarità di questo luogo risiede proprio in quel muschio: ogni fedele che si accosta al tempio, dopo i gesti rituali, si pone davanti alla statua di Fudo Myoo ed esprime un desiderio. A scopo rituale, infine, attinge un mestolo di acqua dalla fonte e lo getta sulla statua. Ecco svelato l’arcano: con secoli di mestolate d’acqua, la statua si è interamente ricoperta di muschio verde. Il venerato viene quindi soprannominato affettuosamente Mizukake Fudo, dove “mizukake” ha il significato di “spruzzo d’acqua” (“mizu” è la parola giapponese per indicare l’acqua e il suo kanji è 水).
Dai… tanto so che anche tu aspetterai il momento con meno gente per tirare una mestolata d’acqua!
